Listening to Gossip in the Queer Archives
Researching the history of same-sex desire poses unique problems. Many men and women purposely sought to deflect attention from their unconventional choices in their own lifetimes, and family members often destroyed letters and diaries after a “queer” family member’s death. How do writers and researchers today use alternative archives–household objects, the exchange of handmade gifts, even gardens and buildings–to tell the stories that have been hidden from history?
